Level 1 and Level 2


Welcome to Levels 1 and 2 at Deepdene Primary School.


We aim to provide a happy, safe and stimulating learning environment which values play, co-operation and respect for individual differences, where students:

  • Value learning
  • Take increasing responsibility for their own learning and behaviour
  • Accept challenges and are encouraged to take risks in their learning
  • Are presented with a wide range of relevant, purposeful learning experiences and a variety of teaching strategies
  • Are aware of teacher expectations
  • Are familiar with and observe class and school rules.



The students will be provided with many opportunities to develop speaking and listening strategies so that they can interact confidently in individual, small group and whole class discussions.


The students will be introduced to a wide range of texts to foster an appreciation and enjoyment of literature; develop the skills necessary to read for information; and improve their writing skills.


Students are introduced to a variety of writing styles and learn to write for a range of purposes.  We teach the students to write in various genres: e.g. letter writing, lists, instructions, reports, stories, poems, procedures etc. Grammar, spelling and handwriting are incorporated.


Mathematics and Science

In Levels 1 and 2 we cover all areas of Mathematics using a hands on approach. The topics include Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.


Science is taught through our units of work and covers a range of engaging STEM activities.

  • Beside the Seaside – How do we enjoy the beach?
  • Up Above – What is up there?
  • On The Move – How do we travel from here to there?
  • Wonderful Plants – How do plants grow?
  • A Safe, Healthy and Special Me – What will keep my safe and healthy?
  • What’s At the Bottom of my Garden? – What’s at the bottom of my garden?
  • Mixing and Moving – How does matter change? / How does force create movement?
  • Then and Now – How does the past affect the future?
